Press Release: Mayor Stewart Announces Bid for Reelection

MAYOR STEWART ANNOUNCES BID FOR REELECTION

NEW BRITAIN—Mayor Erin E. Stewart on Thursday filed her campaign paperwork in the Town Clerk’s office for her 2017 mayoral campaign.

“While we have made substantial progress in our City over the last three years, there are many projects and initiatives I am dedicated on seeing through to their completion,” said Mayor Stewart, who was first elected in 2013. “I look forward to continuing the transformation in New Britain and working to make our community a better place to live, work, and play.”

Stewart, the 40th Mayor of New Britain, was first elected at age 26 in 2013, beating out Democratic-incumbent Timothy O’Brien. In 2015, Stewart overwhelmingly won a second term and was instrumental in bringing about a 12-3 Republican majority on the City’s Common Council—the first time in decades.

When Stewart came into office, financial mismanagement had left the City with a $30 million budget deficit. Since then, Stewart has re-organized City Hall, moved every labor union onto high deductible health savings plans, restructured debt, made significant efforts to curtail spending, and has grown the City’s rainy day fund by more than $15 million.

“We are now a City that others are looking to as an example of how a municipality can transform itself and bring stability and strength to its finances,” said Stewart. “We have been successful in finding ways to go beyond the ordinary and reduce costs, attract developers, and grow our local economy.”

From investments in parks and schools, the earning of a 2016 “All-America City” award from the National Civic League, beautification projects, eliminating chronic homelessness, boosting community pride, adding new activity and vibrancy to the City’s downtown Central Park, and the creation of more than 700 new jobs, Mayor Stewart has helped to usher in a new era for New Britain.

A kickoff event is planned for 6 p.m. January 19, 2017 at the St. George Orthodox Church Greek Hall at 301 West Main Street.
