Candidate profile: Daniel Salerno, Democrat joins GOP aldermanic slate

Salerno — a diehard Democrat for decades who was a national field organizer for then-Democratic presidential candidate Walter Mondale in 1984 — said he decided to run on the slate of Republican mayoral hopeful Erin Stewart, in part, because of his dissatisfaction with the party he is still a member of.

“I feel that locally, as a Democrat, the local Democratic party has lost its way,” said the 63-year-old city native. “It has not opened up its tent and — in many ways — reflects the tea partiers in Congress. The party has obstructed programs and efforts made by the past administration just because someone was a Republican. A prerequisite here to be a Democrat, it seems, is you have to hate Republicans. Republicans here are middle class, they own their own homes, they pay their taxes and send their children to the school system.”
